Out of more than 35 nominees nationwide, Mac Marine Group apprentice Tom Ironside has been selected as Australia’s top marine apprentice for 2025.
Rising Talent at Sydney Boat Show
Mac Marine Group’s Tom Ironside has been named the 2025 BIA Apprentice of the Year, highlighting the strength of Australia’s marine training sector.

The announcement took place during the official opening of the Sydney Boat Show. The 22-year-old Ironside, from Newport in New South Wales, completed his training in Marine Craft Construction and is now working toward a second trade in Engineering.
National Recognition for Young Shipwright
Judges selected him from more than 35 apprentices across Australia, reflecting his skill, dedication, and commitment to advancing his career in the marine industry.
Entries came from BIA member businesses across manufacturing, retail, service and repair, and marinas. The judging panel interviewed finalists before naming state winners and commendations.
Strong Field of Nominees
Queensland’s Patrick Bognar and South Australia’s Will Newman were named state winners. Highly commended awards went to Joel Morgan from New South Wales and Connor McGinley from Queensland.
Commended recognition was given to Hudson Beaty and Tyson Frensch, both from South Australia.
Industry Support and Community Value
BIA President Adam Smith said the award recognised Tom Ironside’s achievements and the strong support members give apprentices. Winners received trophies, certificates, and Repco tool vouchers. Ironside’s prize includes a trip for two to the 2026 Auckland Boat Show.
BIA will also give Certificates of Appreciation to all nominees to highlight the industry’s commitment to local talent.
