Emergency services responded to a string of incidents across Newport between Saturday, 23 May and Tuesday, 26 May, including a beach rescue at Bungan Beach, reports of disorderly behaviour, and a suspected break-in.

NSW Police were first called to Barrenjoey Road just after 11am on Saturday, 23 May, following reports of a break-in at a property. Further details about the incident have not been released.

Later that evening, shortly before 10pm on Saturday, 23 May, police received reports of a group of disorderly youths gathered near Gladstone Street.

Fire and Rescue NSW Avalon Station was then called to Grandview Drive just after 6am on Tuesday, 26 May, following concerns about a possible gas leak. Firefighters used gas detection equipment but found no leak, instead tracing an odour to a sewer pipe. Residents were advised to contact a plumber.

A major emergency response unfolded at Bungan Beach just before midday on Tuesday, 26 May, after reports of a surfer in distress in heavy surf conditions.

NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Northern Beaches Council lifeguards attended the scene after the male surfer, believed to be in his 20s, lost his surfboard when his leg rope snapped in strong swells.

The surfer was reportedly battered by heavy waves and swept towards the southern end of the beach by strong currents before managing to climb onto rocks by the time rescuers arrived.

Authorities confirmed the man was uninjured and had not inhaled water. A Northern Beaches Council lifeguard later helped retrieve the surfer’s board before he returned to the Surf Life Saving Club and made his own way home.

Shortly after the beach incident, police received a further report just before 12.15pm on Tuesday, 26 May, regarding alleged drug-related activity on Barrenjoey Road.

The incidents form part of a broader snapshot of recent police and emergency service activity across Newport.
