Work has begun on the Clontarf aquatic precinct at Grace Lutheran Primary School, with a 25-metre swimming pool and a smaller learn-to-swim pool expected to be completed early next year.
Two Pools Planned For The Clontarf Campus
The development will include modern changerooms and amenities, landscaped surrounds and infrastructure designed to support aquatic education and student wellbeing.
Construction is taking place on the school’s current staff car park. The site was selected so the new facilities could be added without using existing play areas.
Hammond & Neale is managing the project, Elevation Architecture is responsible for the design and Integral Construction is carrying out the building work.
Project Developed Over Nine Years
The Clontarf aquatic precinct was first proposed nine years ago and has been planned over the past five years. Grace Lutheran Primary School is funding the project.
Principal Trudy Moala said the development had required persistence and support from those involved, including the School Council, which contributed to the project’s planning and progression.
The precinct has been designed for curriculum activities, learn-to-swim classes, aquatic education and co-curricular programs. The plans also include improved connections across the campus.
Water Safety Shapes School Program
The school intends to use the new pools to develop water confidence and swimming ability among students. Water safety is regarded by the school as an essential life skill for children in Queensland, particularly when they may attend pool parties or swim with friends.
Ms Moala also identified a decline in swimming skills among children aged about nine and 10 after the COVID period. The school plans to use its swimming program to strengthen those skills.
The development follows parent feedback about access to quality sporting programs. Swimming will be added to the school’s existing touch football academy, netball, tennis and running activities once the precinct is completed.
Grace Swimming To Operate The Precinct
Grace Swimming, which operates at Grace Lutheran College in Rothwell, will be contracted to run the primary school facility.
The primary school has worked with the college and Grace Swimming staff while planning the program. Head coach Chris Phillips has experience in early-learning swimming and has worked with primary schools across north Brisbane.
The program is expected to begin with children aged two to three before supporting further development into squads and activities at Grace Lutheran College. It is intended to cater for beginners building water confidence as well as advanced swimmers competing at higher levels.
Completion of the aquatic precinct is anticipated early next year.
