If you’ve lived in Newport for any length of time, chances are you knew Gordon “Gordy” Spring — or at least crossed paths with him. He was the agent many families trusted, the one people recommended, and a familiar face in the village who always had time for a chat. His sudden passing has left a quiet but unmistakable absence across the community.
Gordy, who was 56, died unexpectedly following a medical emergency. The news has been met with an outpouring of sadness from colleagues, clients and friends across Newport and the wider Northern Beaches.
A Life Intertwined With Newport
Gordy’s working life was closely tied to the place he called home. Over more than 30 years in real estate, he built a career grounded in local knowledge and long-standing relationships. As owner and principal of LJ Hooker Newport, and a part-owner of LJ Hooker Avalon Beach, he helped guide countless families through some of life’s biggest decisions.
Those who worked alongside him say his success came not from pressure or polish, but from consistency and trust. Many clients returned to him time and again, sometimes across generations, knowing he would give honest advice and steady guidance.

More Than an Agent
To many locals, Gordy was more than a real estate professional. He was known for his easy manner, quick humour and genuine interest in people’s stories. Whether meeting someone for the first time or catching up with a long-time client, he had a way of making conversations feel relaxed and unhurried.
Colleagues recall his energy in the office and his willingness to support others, particularly younger agents finding their way in the industry. He was seen as a leader who led by example rather than instruction.

Family at the Centre
Away from work, Gordy’s world revolved around his family. He is survived by his wife, Melissa, and their three daughters. Friends say he spoke often about them with pride and gratitude, and that family life was always his anchor.
His connection to Newport extended beyond business, shaped by everyday interactions, shared events and the rhythms of life in a close-knit beachside community.

A Community Says Goodbye
In the days following his death, tributes flowed from across the Northern Beaches, with many sharing memories of kindness, professionalism and quiet generosity. A private memorial service was held locally, followed by a celebration of life that reflected the warmth and colour Gordy brought to those around him.
While his passing leaves a deep void for his family and colleagues, it has also prompted reflection on the lasting impact of a life well lived.
In Newport, Gordy Spring will be remembered not just for the homes he helped buy and sell, but for the trust he earned, the relationships he built and the genuine sense of community he carried with him.
