Coles Local Launches in Newport with Fresh Look and Local Focus

Coles has reopened its Newport supermarket under the Coles Local brand, following a three-month refurbishment aimed at modernising the store and focusing on local offerings.

Long-Awaited Upgrade Complete

Coles has returned to Barrenjoey Road, unveiling a Coles Local store after three months of refurbishment. The site had not seen major investment since its original construction in 2009. The upgrade marks the 30th Coles Local store nationally and the tenth in New South Wales.

According to company representatives, the Newport site plays a key role in reconnecting the supermarket chain with the community between Avalon and Mona Vale, filling a local gap in accessible groceries.

A Store Reflecting Local Character

The Coles Local format focuses on tailoring product ranges and store design to the needs of the surrounding community. The Newport store includes more than 774 products from New South Wales suppliers and features a layout aimed at supporting quick, convenience-driven shopping.

The newly opened store includes an in-store deli. They offer cheeses, meats, and antipasto. Ready-to-eat options include sushi by Taiko, sandwiches from Bread Spread, and pasta meals from Pasta Pantry—the bakery in the store is supplied by Sonoma, Baked & Co, and Nonna’s Bakery.

Additional features include a frozen dessert bar with mochi and single-serve ice-creams, and snack options from brands like Good Crisp and Keogh’s.

Team and Mural Tie to Community

Newport’s store mural was created by artist Mark Chester Harding, who drew from his personal connection to the area to illustrate elements like the 199 bus, Pittwater boats, and local rugby club. He shared the artwork publicly, crediting Hibernate Studio and representation agency Jacky Winter for supporting the project.

Store Manager Tarnee Wong, who had worked on several Coles Local renewals, personally oversaw recruitment for the Newport site. The store team includes 30 returning employees and 24 new staff.

Supporting Local and Donating Surplus

The store will coordinate with food rescue organisations like SecondBite and Hands and Feet Blacktown. The goal is to redistribute unsold but edible food to individuals facing food insecurity.

Company Perspective and Local Reception

Coles leadership acknowledged the collective effort behind the project’s success. Coles Local’s head, Gemma Koo, described the Newport store as a milestone, with support from teams across the state contributing to its launch.

City official Jacqui Scruby attended the opening and noted the store’s relevance for residents seeking both affordable staples and boutique local options.
