New probationary constables have joined Northern Beaches Police Area Command, adding frontline officers to the command responsible for policing Newport and the wider Pittwater area.
Ten officers from NSW Police Class 369 were allocated to Northern Beaches Police Area Command after attesting at the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn on Friday, 21 August. The recruits began duties at police stations across NSW on Monday, 24 August.
Class 369 comprised 353 probationary constables, making it the largest NSW Police graduating class in 14 years. The new officers will complete 12 months of on-the-job training and distance education before being confirmed to the rank of constable.
Newport forms part of the Pittwater policing area
Newport is covered by Northern Beaches Police Area Command, which also serves Mona Vale, Avalon, Palm Beach and surrounding Pittwater communities.
Member for Pittwater Jacqui Scruby welcomed the recruits in a statement on 27 August, citing anti-social behaviour, retail crime and threats faced by workers in local shops and village centres.
Scruby said residents wanted more police and referred to shoplifting, swarming and coordinated raids targeting bottle shops and retail areas. NSW Police allocated the latest recruits to the wider command and did not publish individual station assignments.
Barrenjoey Road and nearby streets record recent incidents
Recent Newport police reports have included theft, disorder and traffic incidents around Barrenjoey Road and nearby streets. In April, police received a report of goods stolen from a store on Barrenjoey Road, while officers were also called to assist an intoxicated person at The Boulevarde.
Police activity continued in August, when officers received a report of disorderly youths near Nullaburra Road and responded to a motor vehicle collision on Barrenjoey Road.
A separate June case involved an alleged road-rage incident on Irrubel Road. Police said a 16-year-old e-bike rider was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition after a collision with a Jeep. A 59-year-old man was later charged with driving furiously causing bodily harm and negligent driving.
Recruits begin year-long operational training
The new probationary constables will spend their first 12 months completing operational training and further study while serving within NSW Police.
Of the 353 officers who graduated with Class 369, 67 were allocated across the North West Metropolitan Region, including 10 assigned to Northern Beaches Police Area Command. NSW Police did not publish individual station assignments for the recruits.
For Newport, the additional command-wide resources arrive as police continue to respond to a mix of theft, disorder, traffic and other incidents across the suburb and surrounding Pittwater communities.
