Paralysis Tick Cases Increase in Newport as Vets Issue Alerts

Sydney Animal Hospitals has reported an increase in paralysis tick cases at its Newport clinic, prompting health alerts for local pet owners.

Tick Season Escalates in Newport

Sydney Animal Hospitals, which operates clinics in Newport and Avalon, recorded higher numbers of paralysis tick cases in October, with reports showing that cases more than tripled compared with the same period last year. The rise followed a spell of warm weather and rain that supported tick activity.

A Newport cat, Tiggy, was recently treated after showing signs of illness. Staff found a paralysis tick near the shoulder blade, and the cat required overnight monitoring, oxygen support, and treatment before stabilising.

Tick Exposure and Prevention in Newport

Veterinary staff noted that the warm coastal environment and surrounding bushland contribute to tick exposure for pets in Newport. Several affected cats had not left their properties, with ticks potentially entering homes by attaching to clothing, other pets, or wildlife.

Owners have been advised to watch for early signs such as unsteady movement, reduced strength in the back legs, vomiting, or breathing difficulty. Recommended prevention options include monthly topical products, oral treatments, long-lasting collars, and a once-yearly injection.

Free Lump Checks Available in Newport

Sydney Animal Hospitals is offering free lump checks and cytology testing across its clinics, including Newport, until the end of November. The program includes a no-cost examination, free testing, and a donation from lump removals to Assistance Dogs Australia.

Leptospirosis Advisory Across NSW

The organisation has also issued an alert regarding an increase in leptospirosis cases in New South Wales. Fourteen dogs have tested positive this year, with most cases being fatal. A new bivalent vaccine that covers two major strains is now available.

While Newport is not listed among the areas with higher risk, the advisory notes that exposure can occur in a range of environments, including locations with water sources or wildlife.

Community Awareness in Newport

Pet owners in Newport have been encouraged to keep prevention schedules up to date and monitor their pets for changes in behaviour or movement. The recent case involving Tiggy highlighted the importance of consistent protection, as missing a single dose can leave pets vulnerable.

Programs offered during November, along with broader health alerts, serve as reminders for residents to maintain regular pet checks and vaccinations.

Outlook

Sydney Animal Hospitals expects tick activity to continue while warm and humid conditions persist. Newport pet owners are advised to carry out regular checks, maintain prevention treatments, and seek veterinary assistance promptly if their pets show concerning symptoms..
