A Bilgola Plateau resident is recognised for his outstanding service to the Northern Beaches community. Ian Hocking was named the Senior Citizen of the Year at the 2025 Australia Day Award for his tireless volunteer work with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Warringah Pittwater unit.
The Australia Day Award acknowledges the remarkable contributions of local individuals and groups who dedicate their time and effort to improving the community. This year’s winners represent the diverse ways people contribute to the Northern Beaches, from surf lifesaving and emergency services to community events and fundraising initiatives.
Dedicated Service in Emergencies

Ian Hocking’s commitment to the SES has significantly impacted the Northern Beaches. As Deputy Unit Commander, he is vital in ensuring the unit is prepared to respond to emergencies. He takes on the responsibility of Duty Officer every four weeks, managing emergency alerts, coordinating responses, and allocating teams effectively.
His work involves direct communication with the public and team members, ensuring that assistance is provided quickly and efficiently during critical situations.
A Leader and Mentor

Beyond his direct involvement in emergency responses, Ian is a respected leader within the SES. He actively supports unit members in their training and development, fostering a culture of readiness and professionalism.
He encourages his team to practice and refine their skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for any challenge. Ian also led the organisation of a large-scale training event that brought together four different SES units, demonstrating his commitment to collaboration and skill development across the service.
