A ride in Newport took a tragic turn when two 14-year-old girls on an e-bike crashed into a car, leaving one teenager hospitalised after the collision with serious injuries.
E-bike Misstep Lead to Collision
Two teenage girls were riding an e-bike on Saturday, 18 January, up Beaconsfield Street when the rider struggled to pedal effectively. She found herself in the wrong gear for the steep incline that caused the incident.

At 5:45 p.m., NSW Police and NSW Ambulance responded after receiving the accident report at Newport.
Both failed a safe U-turn attempt to go back down the hill to change gear, as overheard on one of the girls’ police statement. As a result, they turned directly into the grey 2002 Nissan Pulsar hatchback that was heading down the road.
Teen Flying and Car Damaged
According to the car driver, who was travelling at approximately 50 km/h, the teenagers appeared in front without warning. The impact of the collision threw the girls out flying.
Thankfully, both had their helmets on, however, the car sustained bonnet damage and a smashed windscreen.
Emergency Response and Hospitalization
On their arrival, paramedics examined the two girls, one of whom suffered minor injuries and did not need further treatment. Meanwhile, the other teenager, who was seen lying on the footpath is seriously hurt and requires intensive care.
Due to the accident, she sustained several abrasions and a bruised head. The responders assisted her to stand and guided her through the ambulance stretcher.
She was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick and got her into a stable condition before 6:15 p.m.

Officers from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command conducted inquiries and interviewed the occupants of the car at the scene. The driver underwent a roadside breath test, and came back negative.
